But he grabbed it.
He did?
Oh, yes, because the other choice that came was university of Oklahoma or someplace, which we really didn’t want to move with three kids in school and all that.
Well, how did you react to this firing?
I was terribly upset. Well, he was much more upset than I think I was. Well, we had enough to live on, but as you know, it doesn’t mean that you can get a job in the area immediately, and this was April.
Oh my .
Anyway, it all worked out for the best.
But Nancy, how didn’t that kind of put a strain on you you first getting married and you’re fired the next day?
It was terrible, he came home, we were just…
What did that do to you?
Well, I don’t remember. Evidently John handled it very well, he didn’t make me feel. It was horrible. He said “don’t worry, there are plenty of places “and, oh, they did tell him to finish out the year, which he did. Then we went to Europe, and then the meantime, this other job opened up, and so we knew he had a job the next year and it was close by. I lived in Menlo Park, he just moved in with me, which was easier. Moved his piano and himself – took up the whole living room with the piano. So anyway, that was wonderful, once I tasted Europe, and I know you feel that way about it too. I couldn’t wait. I said, when are you going to your sabbatical?well, he didn’t get tenure, on the tenure or whatever it was, for quite a while, I don’t remember the year, it was 1964, that’s right I think that was the year.
