Recorded March 17, 2025 at the Davld Packard Electrical Engineering Building at Stanford University, where he is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering.
I met Fred when I joined Software Publishing Corporation (SPC) in 1981 as a computer programmer. My girlfriend (and later wife) Caren Kelman, knew him when they worked at Hewlett Packard. When she heard he was leaving HP to begin his own company, she urged me to apply for a job there, and so I did. I was hired to write a word processor for the Apple II (pfs:Write). Fred was by far the best boss I ever had. (By the way, pfs:Write became best the best selling word processor on the Apple II, and later on the IBM PC, beating out Microsoft Word several years running).
