So anyway, we came back.  I told him I didn’t want to believe in it, but since he did it, I went along and we came back.

Was that something you discussed? 

We discussed it, but I felt that I really couldn’t stand in. That I couldn’t insist, and I didn’t want to come back, because I didn’t want to be under the domination of the family, but at the same time he was going to make a big salary. So we came back, and he went to work.  I’m trying to think when all this happened.

Len was already born. 

Oh yeah. Len was a little boy about six months old when this happened. I know what it was. On the way back from the New York office where he was stationed, we stopped in Kentucky, where I had lived to see my family. We were going to spend two days and then keep going. We were driving. War was declared. He was in our living room in Kentucky, it came over the radio, and he went to the phone and called Washington that he would like to get back in the bureau, as they would call it, and on the phone he was right away, he was told that anyone who resigned from the FBI was never rehired. There was no way. So, he was sort of panicked about the whole thing, and he said, “well, I’ll apply for the naval intelligence “. He was fitted for this kind of work. He immediately wrote a letter. He was impulsive. When he wanted to do something, Bing, he got it done. He was a very, very brilliant guy, he still is. so he applied for that, sent in his application, went back out to California, and, I can’t remember, oh I know.

He told his folks? 

Yes. He told his folks that he was applying, and, I guess we came back and stayed with them.
