This was part of my upbringing at home. My mother believed in fresh vegetables and fresh hair, and if you were sick, you went to bed, but you didn’t dwell on it. Medicine was never a thing in our family. So, when I finally found what Christian science was, it didn’t concern me particularly. Dan and I would talk it over. “Look, if somebody’s broken his leg”, , “you’d go to the hospital “. He was very sensible about it.
And the babies, deliveries?
Well, you have a problem because it’s a law, but I didn’t have any medication.
How did they go?
Fine. Well, I mean, look at my children today. They all went through the Lamaze method and it’s the same idea. If you’re not afraid, you don’t have a big deal. So, Sam was born and that was fine. But the girl that was in the room with me had a terrible time. I had to get up and hold her in bed. She had a hemorrhage, the whole thing. But this was what really got me in the hospital. When Sam was born, they asked “who is your pediatrician? “And I said I didn’t have one. Well, this turned the hospital upside down. They said, “well, how will we give him the formula for the 2 o’clock bottle? “ And I said, “well, you get some and put it in a bottle and give it to him. “”We can’t do that without a prescription.” And I said, “I’ll get my obstetrician to prescribe it. Well, that won’t work. That can’t do. So I said, “do you mean to say this child is going to starve? “I said, “Well, bring him to me “. That was against the rules. And I said, “do you mean you’re not going to feed this child unless I hire a pediatrician? “And that was exactly what the situation was. So I said, “I will get up and get that baby and feed him.“I was really mad. I was out of bed anyway. They said, “you can’t do that. “And I said “all right. You bring him to me, the last one you feed at night, the 10 o’clock feeding, and bring him to me, the first one you feed in the morning.”
