I’ve been trying to analyze why I came out of this background that I had, with a feeling for other people and with a lack of prejudice that I had. Maybe the only prejudice I have is against rednecks and other people like that. But I know that all the people grew up with, that I’ve seen since, are the same way that they were when we were growing up, some of them have moved away from Lexington, but politically their conservative, this seems to be the sense of many great wealthy people I guess.
Would you say most of them are wealthy now?
Very wealthy, yes. They’ve done well, and they’re wealthier than I am. They married well, the girls, and so on. But they still have the same feelings about blacks that they had a long time ago, and I don’t know what it was that changed my whole attitude. But it changed when I was quite young, and I had a great feeling for oppressed people, and for the underdog, and I did not have prejudice. In fact, I was so sensitive to other peoples feelings that it bothered me to hear this kind of talk. At a very early age, and I don’t know what triggered that.
But you said you can remember feeling different from the others?
Yes, I remember having terrible arguments with people about it, and especially my stepfather.
At what age were you?
