Has that continued?
Yes, not as much. Only a few of us. We resigned from the club about eight, nine, 10 years ago. It was interesting, it was a club that had no Jews, and one night we took some Chileans out there to dinner and I think we were frowned upon because there was being spoken at the table, or something. And one time one of our son said to us, “how can you be so liberal on this and that belong to a country club that doesn’t accept such a thing?” And John and I began to talk, and I said, “you’re right, John. “And John kept saying, “well, you can’t do anything if you’re on the outside. If you’re on the inside, you could maybe say something."
We were one of maybe three Democrats in the club. The only people out there who would put Kennedy buttons on and they almost killed us. I always stuck to my beliefs, I suppose, but I know that resented me being a Democrat, I know. But one of them, I was the golf team, golf, girls scout group one time, and I had to turn over the gavel at the end of the meeting, and one of the things I said was, that I thought they were such a broad minded bunch of girls, and I enjoyed working with them all year, to allow a Democrat to run their Ccub – and nobody laughed. It was great, the way I said it. But, during the campaign, the Nixon Kennedy thing, one of the girls was going around, handing out Nixon buttons, and I said, “I’m terribly sorry, I have my own button.“ And I was the only person with a Kennedy button on. That was a problem. So finally, the kids convinced us that we were wrong to be in this club.
