Was there anyone else besides Monica as a child?
Yes, I had two very, very close friends who lived about 5 miles from me, and we used to, when Monica wasn’t there, and also remember, we went to the same school, Evelyn, Beard, and she – most of my friends families were wealthier than we were – and I, that never occurred to me, particularly, but I realize that their houses were nicer.
That was something…
They had nicer ponies and all that. And I would ride, and the way you got back-and-forth was on our ponies. You come down and we’d spend the night, almost every other night in the summer we would spend with each other, because when you live in the country, you don’t have nursery schools and all that . Anyway, she married a boy from Cincinnati, and they moved to Louisiana, and after I moved away, we always wrote Christmas cards with long letters, about five girls that I was very fond of, and we kept up that way. And finally, one Christmas I put a whole lot of NAACP stickers on one of my Christmas cards to her and got a WOW Letter back, saying that I ought to know better, sending those stamps on a letter, that this is a communist organization, and her dark is on her plantation were really scared when they saw them.
Her darkies?
Her darkies, that’s what we called them. So I just never answered it, and I never, I’m sure we’re friends, but I just thought I’ll skip, and so that was the end of that contact.
So you were like in high school?
Yes.
And in college too?
