I was in a big lecture course with slides, and all of a sudden, I realized I was in over my head, it was just three units. I have never heard any of the terms before, I had never heard anything before, and I still to this day, have nightmares about waking up and not passing the exam. so I spent almost every evening in the library looking at art books, I had to write a paper, and I had my sons here, telling me how to organize a paper, I was so scared, And John said, I have never in my life, he made sort of fun of me a little bit, he said he encouraged me, but was laughing at my fears. That was the first time I got a B. All the other times I got an a, but I only got a B in that course. Well, I didn’t know how, I’ve never written a paper before, but the art course sort of changed everything. I got so excited about art and seeing the pictures the year after that course we went to live in Germany.
Oh, is that the sequence?
Yes, this is the sequence of getting into this thing. And all this time we were over to Germany. We hadn’t any friends, and we’re talking about what we can do in the future that would bring in some money, so that I could travel with John when he went on his trips, and would still be entertaining and fun, and it just sort of evolved. The art was all over Germany, this contemporary art, and I said, well, let’s take some of the money that’s in the savings and loan or whatever and buy some prints and go home and try it, without the idea of how to run a business or anything like that.(laughs.)
How did you think of it, I mean, how did you visualize you were going to do it?
Well, I don’t know what we thought, I can’t really recall whether we thought we’d have a gallery, or whether we do it in our house, or we would do it, except that we like the things that we saw that we bought, we thought they were sail. Anyway, we bought quite a lot of things.
