But, that wasn’t the reason our marriage broke up or anything like that, it was that it wasn’t a very commendable occasion. And getting pregnant was not anything that we trade, I don’t exactly know how I got pregnant. I was using a diaphragm, I don’t know whether it was that I forgot to use it one time and thought it was going to be OK and you know, the right time of the month or something, it may have been that, but I didn’t know that I was pregnant for three months.
And one of the reasons was, I was swimming in an aquacade in San Francisco, the Junior League was going to put on an aquacade, and I was living in San Jose and I was commuting three days a week for the practice. We all went in ahead of time, and I was in the core you know with the swimmers, and I also had to put on a black swimming suit with fins and a black cap, and swim down the pool and back, racing stroke. in addition, I swam a duet with a man, sort of Dusty Williams style, and I had a lot of practicing to do, and I just sort of forgot about my period, one month went by, and then the second month, so at the end of the third, we all had our pictures taken in the paper, and one of the pictures taken of me I’ll remember, I was standing on a ladder, Mrs. Don Edwards, and I noticed in the picture that my tummy was not flat, and I didn’t think much about it, but we all weighed in at the end, and everyone in the swimming pool had lost weight. It was reported in the San Francisco Chronicle that strangely enough Mrs. Don Edwards had gained 4 pounds or what it was (laughs) And I said, that’s strange.
All of a sudden it hit me, and I went tearing down, made an appointment, went to the doctor, Dr. Dunn, and he didn’t even examine me very much, he said, “I’m sure you’re pregnant. “And then he did examine me, and he said, “oh yes, you’re pregnant. I might as well tell you, you probably won’t have a normal birth, you’ll probably have to have a cesarean because you’re too narrow. “
