Nana Biography
Dan was the minister and he married John and me. Marvelous man. What was the definition that somebody gave a Unitarian? A person who believes in at most one God. And I remember Adlai Stevenson was a Unitarian. But very often his sermon would be a book review or something like that. It was fun. And the children I think grew from that experience, knowing that there were lots of others – not one of them is a religious now in the sense of church. Bruce married a Catholic girl and is very good about her. He takes her to mass if she wants to go, but she’s skipping it more and more. She’s backtracking, which nobody is influencing her on that, I just think it’s happening. Inger, who revolted against – that’s Leonard’s wife – she revolted against religion in her family at a very early age and refused to go to school, they were Lutherans.
They were Lutherans?
Her father and mother were the kind that didn’t dance, didn’t play cards, didn’t do anything. I mean, they were strict as you can. And, she won they told them she wouldn’t go to Sunday school anymore, and I said, “What did they do? “She said, “Well, they didn’t make me go, but they went to church and prayed for me”, and she’s always been the rebel. However, when she had her little boy, and her mother came to visit, she succumbed and had him baptized. And this was a family problem. Leonard was very much opposed to it, and Inger said “It can’t hurt. It’ll make my mother happy.” she just wanted to do it to make my mother happy. I would’ve stood on my own beliefs. And she didn’t believe that it was going to help him, but she did it solely for that reason.
