You see them in the community.

 

There’s one that works at Stanford. He’s an awfully nice man. But after I’ve done that, maybe two years, it did depress me. And I decided I’ve lost my usefulness, and when we were talking about work, I wondered how long you could do that and not have it depress you. I don’t know, it’s just tough. So I felt that I wasn’t useful anymore. 


But you know, I mean, it’s easy to say, it would depress anybody. Do you know what particular aspects of it? 


No, I don’t particularly know.  Maybe the hopelessness of it. I had the feeling that, that the treatment that so many of them were getting was wrong, and later, now when we have this movie over, the cuckoo’s nest movie, and almost reminded me of that. There were, it was the kind of orderly who, treated them as children. Come in, you know, he didn’t treat them as people, and I really think that they react to that. Maybe they are different now, maybe they’re learning more about it, but it was sort of like the way they treat very old senile people. Now come on, and do this.
