On Sicily's eastern side, near the town of Catania, lies Mt. Etna, a World Heritage Site and the most active stratovolcanoes ("cone shaped") in the world. Etna's first recorded eruption was in 1500 B.C. Since then Etna has erupted at least 190 times, the most recent on August 14, 2023 (but as time passes, this date will certainly have to be updated). Fortunately it was quiescent when we hiked up it and peered down into its enormous crater. Steam and sulphur fumes were continually emitted from the grounds all around us. Pretty darn spectacular.
