I have visited Kīlauea several times, but only once did I see the lava lake in its crater, when I took a helicopter over it. It was during the day, and the lake was mostly obscured with gases from vents - not nearly as impressive as the photo above (not mine).
Kīlauea is one of the most active volcanoes on earth, with the most recent eruption this month (September 2023). It is considered sacred by the Hawaiian people, home of Pele, goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes.
