A beautiful but deadly cone volcano with an easy trail to the top, Bruce and I climbed it in just a few hours. Vesuvius is of course best known for its violent eruption in 79 AD, which released 100,000 times the thermal energy released by the Hiroshima - Nagasaki bombings, destroying the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. About a thousand bodies have been found in the ash fall deposits over Pompeii, another 300 in Herculaneum.
