We began the day by visiting the Kerry Cliffs (in County Kerry, of course). They are up to 1,000 feet high, among the highest in Scotland.
The Skellig Islands, about 8 miles off the coast. Skellig Michael , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a well-preserrved early Christian monastic settlement. It also appears in two Star Wars films: The Force Awakens, and The Last Jedi (as Luke Skywalker's island). It also has one of the largest seabird colonies in the world.
Sorry - I just couldn't get enough of the Kerry Cliffs. Later on I saw the more famous (and much more crowded) Cliffs of Moher, in County Clare. These were better:
More great landscapes:
And then the Tetrapod Trackway: a set of fossilised footprints of the first four-limbed vertebrates, about 385 million years old. It is among the oldest evidence in the world for tetrapods walking on land:
The Trackway is part of the Valentia Slate formation, beautiful in its own right:
More extensive green fields:
And finally, the Fogher Cliffs, on Valentia Island:
In the trail to the cliffs was a series of placards detailing their early (mythical) history:
A final view of the mainland coast from Valentia Island:
