On top of Mt. Kilimanjaro
Ice formations in the crater of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
We climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. Here I am at the summit, showing off my Uncle Gaylord's Ice Cream t-shirt at the summit (Irv Brenner and I owned the Palo Alto store at the time).
We hired the requisite guides to show us the way (and, more importantly, to carry our backpacks). Our first stop was to purchase food and other supplies. Our second stop, a few miles later, was to hand over most of the supplies to the families of our guides at their village. Hey, it's their livelihood, right? There was still plenty left for us.
On the way up we met a guy carrying a hand glider - he wanted to be the first to conquer Kilimanjaro. We read in the papers a week later that the authorities had given up their search for him...

In March of 1977 we circumnavigated Mt. Kenya. It took us 6 days.
One of Mt. Kenya's peaks from our hut. You can understand why we didn't try to climb it. At 16,795 feet, it is the second highest mountain in Africa (Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest, at 19,341 feet).
