In the center of Rhodesia are the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, thought to have been the capital of a great kingdom during the Late Iron Age, about which little is known. They are some of the oldest and largest structures located in Southern Africa. The Great Enclosure has walls as high as 36 feet, extending 800 feet:
And on to South Africa. We had no trouble hitching rides: these were touchy times in South Africa, and the military was patrolling, and would stop for us (they thought we were crazy to be hitch hiking).
Good old South Africa. Still under apartheid, Mandela in prison, segregated facilities everywhere.
We took a tour of a gold mine near Johannesburg. Here it is being poured into a mold, with the resultant brick cool to the touch in a short while.
The authorities staged a demonstration for us: two teams of blacks competed in assembling sets of wooden segments into a circle. The entire exercise left me feeling very uneasy.
