Feb 5, 1962: Letter to Jeep from Sam in Beutelsbach Germany
Dear Jeep,
I hear you may hit Europe this summer. I’m all for it. And may I recommend the continent? Thank you. I recommend it wholeheartedly, what little I have seen of it.
School here is quite different from Stanford in Palo Alto. We have classes only four days a week, with Friday and the weekends free for traveling. The courses themselves, though very interesting, require a minimum of homework: the teachers here also want to have fun, I guess, instead of correct papers all day.
So far, I’ve been having very good weekends. My first was spent in and around Stuttgart, looking at the sites, speaking German (hah) with the people, and going to two operas and a ballet – all for fabulously low prices because of student reductions. The other weekends (one in Oberstdorf, on the German Austrian border, the other in the Black Forest) we’re also good, and cheap. The really big deal, however, was a 10 day trip to Rome. Wow. Good tours, lots of free time, good weather, everything we could ask for. I can’t wait to revisit that fabulous city this summer, there’s enough in it for a two-year visit, I’m sure.
Well, time to pack – you see, I’m off to Heidelberg next weekend. Tough life. Give my love to Ollie, Shelby, Joan, Lynn, and Mr. and Mrs. Keller for me, plus all the descendants therefrom. Hope to see you over here this summer.
Love,
Sam
