We hired Mike, who stayed with us for over a year, and he was wonderful with the boat and the kids (he is currently married and running a dive shop in Fiji). 

I took (and passed) a course in Morse code, thinking it might prove useful on the trip.  It turns out I never had to use it (the Morse code requirement was eliminated in 1991).
