This guy, an oceanic whitetip shark, cruised along beside us for several days, much to our kids excitement. During both World Wars, the oceanic whitetip shark was a major concern for torpedoed boats and downed planes.
This little fella hitched a ride with us for a few hours.
The occasional whale would pop up.
Our first view of land after 3 weeks at sea: Les Isles Marquises (in crappy weather)
Anchored in the Baie de Vierges, on the west coast of the most southerly, and remotest, of the Marquesas Islands, Fatu Hiva.
Speedy, our shipboard pet. We picked him up in San Diego. And Dana goes up the mast.
You can see why the Baie de Vierges is also known as the "Bay of Penises".
Rachael and a local beauty
We did quite a bit of hiking on this gorgeous island.
The Marquesas are steep, volcanic islands, with not many good anchorages.
Rachael and a local friend got all dolled up for the Bastille Day celebrations
Party Time on Bastille Day!
Rachael entertaining some locals with her collection of beauty aids.
