We started in June 2007 at Whitney Portal, west of Lone Pine. When we reached our first lake, Dana jumped in, honoring a decision he had earlier made to swim in every lake we encountered. Apparently it was colder than he had anticipated - it was the only lake he swam. We climbed on to the top of Mt Whitney, which is the southern terminus of the trail, and continued until I got off at Vermilion Valley Resort (Lake Edison), where Caren joined Dana to Mammoth Lakes; from there on Dana was on his own. I believe he added a climb up Half Dome to celebrate his completion of the trail at Yosemite.
Dana had the goal of swimming in every lake we encountered: this is the first one... and it proved to be the last.
Dana on the summit: 14,505 ft
We came across these hikers on the way. One was a nephew of the first to hike the full Pacific Coast Trail (Erik Rybeck); another was Yogi (on the left), who wrote the definitive guide to the PCT (and the one I used).
