This was a busy day: Trujillo's Mercado Central, Huaca el Brujo, Huaca del Arco Iris, Huaca Esmeralda, Chan Chan, and now Huaca del Sol y de la Luna.
The "Temples of the Sun and the Moon" are 700 years older than Chan Chan, and were the capital of the Moche culture The Huaca del Sol was the administrative center (closed to visitors), the Huaca de la Luna the religious and ceremonial center.
The Huaca del Sol. It was built from about 140 million adobe bricks. It was partially destroyed by the Spanish when they diverted the course of the Moche River, washing away about a third of it. The remains of 40 sacrificed warriors were discovered on a ceremonial altar in the last temple built.
The Huaca de la Luna. It was built over six centuries to AD 600, with six succeeding generations expanding on it and completely covering the previous structure, and preserving the multi-colored friezes.
Huaca de la Luna
A biringo, the native Peruvian hairless dogs that hang out here. Their body temperature is higher than that of normal dogs and they have traditionally been used as body warmers for people with arthritis.
I couldn't resist...
