Lima: Gran Hotel Bolivar, Plaza de Armas, Monasterio de San Francisco
Sep. 13, 2016. Central Lima. Marriott Hotel.
Breakfast at 9 for the four of us, then taxi to the Plaza San Martin in central Lima to follow the Lonely Planet's walking tour. Checked out the Gran Hotel Bolivar (the city's first fine hotel), and the Iglesias de La Merced (nice mahogany altars), but passed on the Catedral de Lima and the chance to see Pizarro's remains. Just in time for the noon changing of the guard at the Plaza de Armas (nothing special).
Watched Che buy a bunch of beads and Len an amber necklace, then discovered by accident the wonderful El Cordano, where the president likes to lunch. Great atmosphere, all locals. Che had tongue, Len soup, Bruce some sort of crab, and Sam steak and rice. All yummy.
Finally the Monasterio de San Francisco, with wonderful courtyards, chapels, and catacombs with lots of skulls and bones laid out in geometric designs. Took lots of (illegal) photos. Back to the hotel by 5:30, everybody tired. Ate at the 26th floor Executive Lounge, thanks to Len & Bruce's Marriott privileges. Verified our trip to Cusco / Machu Picchu is in order, then everybody crashed.
