Couple of tour groups, one American (my first): real oldsters. Why do all tourists take pictures of themselves in funny poses in front these lovely ruins? Huge site, best known for its Templo de Los Mascarones, with its 3 meter high stucco masks of the sun god facing west. Another great entrance through the jungle, with the temples in their grassy fields gradually revealing themselves.
Big monkey crossed road on drive to Xpuhil. Then a blue morpho almost hit my windshield.

Kuhunlich, Yucatán
The site covers about 21 acres, surrounded by dense sub-tropical rainforest, and it contains almost 200 mounds, that remain largely unexcavated. It is is best known for its Temple of the Masks, an Early Classic pyramid whose central stairway is flanked by huge humanized stucco masks. The Temple was built around 500 A.D.

Xpujil, Yucatán
Great example of Rio Bec style, date around 500-750 AD. Three towers, center one 53 m high. Impossibly steep stairs. Jaguar mask in back of central tower. Nobody else here. Because a lot of the decoration was done in stucco over stone and then painted, very little of it remains. Sometimes though the stones themselves are arranged to form stick-like representations of gods and animals.
