We had a new car. I had lots of new clothes and moved to California. On the surface, and even together, we were happy. But there was nothing like what I now have with John. And whether that’s maturity or what it is, I don’t know. it’s probably immaturity. We just really didn’t have anything to build on then.
Our life together was great. There were all these exciting things happening, we went to exciting places. We were politically active. I was very interested in politics when I first came out here we were living in San Jose. I joined the women’s Republican club, because in Kentucky the Republicans were the liberals, and I thought that I would get active in a political party. I realized in the first 10 minutes of the first meeting I was in the wrong group.
He was politically active, and he became president of the young Republicans of California. He had a brother who was in an automobile accident the first year we were married. His father owned a title insurance company. He asked Don to stop law school. Don was in law school at Stanford, and come and take over his brothers job, which Dan did. Then he studied at Knight his last year of Law school and took the bar anyway and passed it. he only went to law school for two years, but he did finish the bar. He hated the title business, and, for this reason we, I kept thinking, well, are you going to stay here? Are you going to really take over your father‘s business? He didn’t know. All of us sudden one night he came home and said, “ you know what I want to do? I think I’ll go join the FBI.” I said, “why“? He said, “ I’m going to tell my dad that we’re going to war sometime and this would be a very good thing to be in.” he was afraid of hurting his family’s feelings, dropping out of taking over the family business, but it was really something he hated. That was fine with me. So he applied and was accepted.
