He told the family why, and that appeased their feelings. So we left California and went to Washington for the training, and then his first place where he went was Michigan, Grand Rapids. And that’s where our first son was born.
You went with him to Michigan?
Oh yes, I went with him to Washington for the training, most of it.
How did you feel about leaving California
I didn’t. It was exciting. I knew it was not permanent. I knew that we’d probably go to a lot of different places. I hadn’t really been around very much and every place I went was exciting to me. We were out here after the FBI was over. It was when he was in law school that first year. I learned to ski. We went skiing. We went to lots of golf tournaments. He was a champion golfer. We played together in golf tournaments. So life was very frivolous in many ways.
Did you feel that way at the time?
No, I didn’t. I just thought that was the way life was. It was just beautiful. We had a good time together, but I cannot, I’m looking back, I know I was happy because I am always had that capacity. I’m happy almost everywhere , looking back on it, I don’t think we ever had a kind of feeling where you just hugged and felt this great warmth that I have now with Jon. And yet I’m not sure that it mattered.
At the time?
Yeah. His mother and father and I got along beautifully. We had to fool them all the time. They didn’t drink and we did, we were always hiding the liquor glasses when they came in.
How did you feel about that?
I feel terrible about that. I kept saying, you’re a big grown man, almost 30 years old, why don’t you just tell her.
