When I went into golf, it was much more fun to play and a golf tournament or if you are playing in a foursome to play with money. It didn’t have to be a lot of money, that would scare you. But playing bridge for fun is nothing for me. I just don’t see how people can sit around and do that. I like to play where there’s some steaks , so then there’s an incentive. And golf was the same way. And I know most of the people that I played with felt the same way.
And then I guess I like to win, and I played in a lot of sports, I was, I haven’t even gone into my sports life, but I was very athletic as a child, marvelous horseback rider. I’m not bragging, but I had the advantage of being on a horse from the time I was six years old. I showed in horse shows, I trained horses to jump, I trained polo ponies, and I played on ladies polo teams, and so all this riding, but in addition, I played tennis and golf and basketball and was on all the teams and for three years I went to boarding school. I was voted the most outstanding athlete in the school for the girls . Well, it was no big deal, because it was a small school. But I think that was because I grew up in the country and my mother didn’t want to see me, I think she’s responsible for some of this, she didn’t want me to grow up so soon and be sophisticated and so she dressed me, or let me have a pony, and do the country things, and not become lipsticked and using rouge and all that. So I really didn’t grow up, as I told you the first time, until I was 16, I didn’t know what was going on except sports. When I was married to Dan, he played golf so I took that up with a vengeance so I could be a good golfer and I learned to ski and I learned to do everything.
