In September of 2000, during our five year sailing adventure in the South Pacific, we reached Ambryn Island in Vanuatu, and with some cruising friends decided with to climb Mt. Ambryn, the beautiful volcano at its center.
Our hiking companions
On our way up, through ash plains, loose ash, and gravel hills...
... and sometimes, we had to scramble over rocks...
But we made it to the caldera's hugh rim, which covers an area of 40 square miles. Mt. Ambryn is considered an active volcano, with 48 eruptions since 1774 (the year Captain Cook visited the island). It last erupted from 2008 to 2018.
On our way down, very slowly, and very tired.
We were greeted at the bottom by some locals (I don't think they expected us to make it).
