The circumference or Mt. Aso is around 75 miles, and features a cone with five distinct peaks. The photo above is Mt. Naka, one of the"Five Mountains of Asu". Mt. Aso most recently erupted in 2016.
The Aso Caldera, one of the largest in the world, contains the city of Aso (shown here).
When I visited in 1968, Mt. Aso was a popular suicide spot. All you had to do is drive up to one of the calderas and jump off. I haven't heard that this still is still going on...
Fun Fact: 1962 James Bond author Ian Fleming visited the volcano while researching his Japan-set novel You Only Live Twice. Suicide was a key part of the plot.
