Ladakh
Ladakh
In June of 1978 Nicole and I began our most challenging trek: Ladakh. Ladakh is a region of Kashmir administered by India, and disputed by Pakistan and China for many years. We started in its capital Leh, a after a 10 hour bus ride from Srinagar. I had some hand-drawn maps of the region created by a friend; I couldn't find any other maps. Here's a page from these maps (there are ten pages in all):
Ladakh is part of the Tibetan plateau, which translates to high and dry. There are small villages along the way, as well as some pretty impressive monasteries - we stayed in several.
Before we left Leh we attended the Hemis festival, with dancing and costumes.
The ladies were turned out in all their finery:

We met this guy, a school teacher, heading back to his classroom. Wow, am I skinny and tan!
Nicole on a particularly steep section.
We just loved the rope bridges
Just married
We visited the Alchi Monastery on our way out. It has some of the oldest (and oddest) paintings in Ladakh:
On the way out, we made a deal with these guys to have their horses carry our backpacks.
Nun-Kun glacier: our last view of Ladakh.
