For our honeymoon, we chose to hit the big time: two weeks in the South Pacific: Fiji and Tonga.
In Fiji we stayed at the Turtle Island Resort on the privately owned island of ... you guessed it, Turtle Island. We arrived by seaplane (see above), and were greeted by a whole lot of fish at the dock:
Here's why we chose Turtle Island Resort for our honeymoon: There are only 14 couples at a time on the island, each with its own private "bure" (see example below). And each has its own "Bure Mama". She unpacks your bags, tidies your villa, handles your laundry, and arranges picnics and dine-outs. If you like, she guides you on island tours, and even accompanies you on snorkeling excursions, pointing out marine life. In the evening, she’ll join you around the kava bowl for storytelling and songs. This place was recognised as Fiji’s top resort by Conde Nast Traveler.
"The Blue Lagoon", starring fifteen year old Brooke Shields, was filmed on Turtle Island. Here is Caren standing on the movie set altar they left behind. Little known fact: because Brooke at six feet was two inches taller than her costar Christopher Atkins, their beach scenes were filmed with Brooke walking in a trench beside Christopher. We learned this from our Bure Mama - see how useful they are?
Naked Caren - Woo woo!
We went our singing and drinking to catch our evening meal
Snorkeling over what we were told is the largest coral head in Fiji.
