1506.5
Lots of water all along, but still carried around 1 gallon ( 1 1/2 pints in bladder, 1 1/2 in big plastic bottle, 1 in small plastic bottle)
Amazing views of Castle Crags, but trail started climbing from 2,300 ft, and wouldn’t let up. Switchback heaven, trail often blasted thru granite. Finally quit at 5:30 pm (5160 ft), camped on trail because nothing else. Saw no one except a girl crossing the PCT on her way along Castle Crags trail. Slight shower in afternoon, thunder in distance, clouding up.
End: 1519; distance: ~4 mi Dunsmuir train station to road, then 13 mi.

Camping on beautiful ridge. Left Etna on foot, walked ~ 2 hours before getting a lift (part way) from a logger heading up to load up with big trees. Walked some more, 2nd ride by couple in pickup truck. She warned me that it was going to be cold tonight. Eventually started walking north from Etna summit around noon. No water for about 5 hours. But I carried over a gallon of water, and really tanked up before leaving Etna, so no sweat. Feeling MUCH better today. The zero days in Etna were just the ticket.

Wakened by a PCT hiker (first yet!) - I’m cold, with long underwear, hiking pants, rain paints below the waist, and six (!) layers above, plus gloves and a woolen hood. This guy is in shorts & a t-shirt. Recommend trail name of “Tarzan”. Says he’s gonna do 27 miles today. I believe him. Beautiful campsite, on a ridge above a green meadow; on the other side is a strangely-shaped lake, quite beautiful. A few fluffy clouds. I will try cowboy camping.
