Oct 4, 2016. Night bus Arequipa > Cabanaconde
Up at 7, juice at the Mercado across the street, short walk to the main plaza to grab a taxi to the Toro Muerto petroglyphs a few kilometers away. Wide open desert-like slope covered with boulders, many with incised images of animals, people, zig zag lines, even a few "spacemen" that Erich Von Däniken used as evidence for extraterrestrial visits in his book Chariots of the Gods. As usual, had the place to myself.
Three hour bus ride back through truly desolate scenery, arriving at the terminal terrestre around 2 PM to discover the next bus for Colca Canyon didn't leave until midnight. OK, 10 hours to burn. I'll take the bus through to Cabanaconde and arrive as the sun comes up.
The site contains some 3000 volcanic rocks with petroglyphs dating back to the Wari culture, active from 500 to 1000 AD.
