Dec 29, 2017. Hotel Ucum, Chetumal, Quintana Roo
Up at 7:30 - it was Cold! But warmed up soon enough. Walked to the Cobá ruins, and spent about two hours from ruin to ruin, amongst many tourists, some walking, some biking, some borne by three-wheeled pedicabs. Many very large stelae, and Nohoch Mul (Big Mound), at 42m the second highest on the Yucatán peninsula (Calakmul’s is #1 at 45m). Fun watching and filming people up and down it, with the help of a rope. Early lunch, again at La Pirámide, again ordering cochinita pibil - and again finding it delicious.
No collectivos or autobuses to Tulum, so split a taxi (M$200 each). Then jumped on an autobus to Chetumal. Too expensive and too few hotels around here. Bus was cheap but no A/C and no bathroom, so I wore Depend underpants, which did the trick. Booked the hotel during the 3 hour ride to Chetumal.
Hotel OK, but a bit expensive, and far from the center of town. So I located a hotel nearer the center recommended by Lonely Planet, but not handled by booking.com. Turns out it is right in the center, has a giant pool, and costs only $10 / night. And because this isn’t a tourist town (Yay!) there were plenty of rooms available. I will hang there over the New Years, and then see if prices have dipped and rooms freed up in Mahahual and Xcalak. In the meantime, rain is forecast in Cancun for the next several days. Ha ha!
Celebrating my good fortune by dining at Las Palmas, the best restaurant in the best hotel in town. And not expensive either. Woo woo. Then another long walk to the malecon, with Xmas lights, kids’ rides, and food vendors.
