Dec 10, 2017. Campeche, Hotel Maya Ah Kim Pech Sucursal
Slow start, but what’s the hurry? I have the whole day to get to Edzná and back. Had a great, if expensive, cappuccino at the Italian Coffee Company, then on to the Mercado for my first pan de cazón (tortillas layered with shredded shark meat: yum!)
Random thought: the sculptured heads of chiefs and warriors, so fierce and noble looking, invariably are atop fat little child-like bodies. Strange.
Text on an introduction to the Maya at Edzná: “The Maya were never helped by extraterrestrial beings...”
Edzná: grey-white, finely fitted stones; five floor stepped pyramid Palenque in style, on an enormous base; most tourists yet: ~50?; cool, cloudy day; huge area, only partially excavated.
Back in town, an amazing light show projected on one of the long buildings surrounding the Zocalo. Really well done. Followed by a Darn good singer at a keyboard with some romantic songs. My cold is worse, but hey the Fiesta takes priority. Oh my, the audience has just joined in the singing.
Couples show more affection in this country. Lots of hand holding, nuzzling, making out on park benches. So many kids! And so much affection showered on them. By dads as much as moms. Lots of smiles. Everybody says good day. Hardly anybody speaks any English. I haven’t seen a non-tourist yet.
Another singer - older, dapper in a Panama hat, sport coat and white trousers. Apparently an “icon”. Wonderfully expressive face and gestures. Must be in his seventies.

Dec 11, 2017. Xpujil, Cabanas Chaac Calakmul
Storm is over. Blue skies and clouds. Still not very hot. Land flat, empty, few small towns. Road better than most: only a few potholes and topaz.
Hacienda Uayamon. Stopped by on a whim. Lovely old and decaying stone buildings from the 1890’s, with a more recent swimming pool nestled among the walls, and two Doric columns planted in the middle. No guests.
