12-9-17 Campeche, Hotel Maya Ah Kim Pech Sucursal
Wow, so cold and windy I had to wear my windbreaker. Well, better than too hot and humid. Breakfast at Luz de Luna, a picturesque little restaurant around the corner, serving dishes created by the owner’s mother and grandmother. My breakfast was delicious. But so huge I could barely finish half of it. Then a short bus ride to the Museo Arqueológico de Campeche & Fuerte de San Miguel, with some really stunning jade masks from Edzná, which I hope to visit tomorrow. The town itself has been given fresh coats of paint of many colors, and with little traffic a rectangular grid of streets is a pleasure to walk around in.
Dinner at La Parroquia: a small shrimp cocktail, some chicken/tomato/cheese/whatever on puffy tortillas, a delicious coconut -flavored horchata, and chocolate and flan for dessert: this at 4:30 PM, and the place was packed.
Back to my hotel for another lesson of Coffee Break Spanish (I’m on lesson 27, and this time through is much better). Also did my thrice-weekly 7 minute workout. Have a bit of a sniffles, but will still go out to see what fiesta festivities might be happening.
Talked with Caren: she loves her new crew, and her new startup, Blue Water Metrics. She sounded really happy. Meanwhile, Southern California is ablaze, the fires even threatening Cate.
Dropped into the bar next to the hotel. Incredibly loud music, flashing lights, all male customers, short fat stripper in super high heels walking on the bar, strange black & white images on a TV monitor over the bar, stripper incredibly strong, did some pull-ups on a bar over the bar, lots of tats too, 5 big bruisers in red t-shirts and Santa caps patrolling and serving. Pretty awful, really. $2 a drink. I’m outta here.
More music and dancing at the Zocalo, but more amateurish as well. After an hour or so, it was bedtime, feeling the beginning of a cold coming on.
