Dec 7, 2017. Teapa, Tabasco, Hotel Rinconcito Talapa
Kind of a wasted day. First went to the Grutas de Coconá, where my headlamp turned out to be a necessity. Followed the path until it started to branch, which persuaded me to turn around before I got lost. The bats and tiny flies didn’t help much either. The on to the Hacienda Los Azufres, whose sulphuric baths were appropriately stinky, and filled with floating yucky stuff to boot. I went ahead and took a dip, then grabbed a combi back to Teapa, for a roast chicken and jamaica drink. Hotel room was tiny, the A/C didn’t work, but the fan was great.
Have I mentioned that a lot of adults (and quite a few youngsters) are overweight? Supposedly Mexico has surpassed the U.S. on this statistic.
Dec 8, 2017. Campeche, Hotel Maya Ah Kim Pech Sucursal
Up kinda early to catch the bus to Villahermosa, then a bus to Campeche (6 hours). It was raining in Teapa when I left - I believe the first rain so far on this trip. I’ve been very regular these past few days, but I’m glad I’ll be on a bus with a bathroom.
Oops - bus doesn’t have a bathroom. Maybe that’s why it was such a cheap fare ($17). All the more expensive buses don’t leave until the evening, so I’m kinda stuck. Wish me luck...
Long, straight, flat passages through fields of oil palms (but no more bananas or sugar cane), cattle and their accompanying egrets, swamps, over enormous rivers, rain continual. As usual, AC on full: thank goodness for my Marmot windbreaker.
Still not used to the really bad music that is continually blaring from buses, stores and restaurants.
By the way, the name of this hotel means “Branch of the Lord Sun Sheep-Tick”.
After 8 hours on the bus (but no lower digestive tract issues!) arrived at Campeche, where it was not raining (yay).
Short walk to La Pigua, an elegant and expensive restaurant, where I downed creamy shrimp soup (fabulous) and grilled fish, accompanied by two glasses of white wine, and followed by a nice strong (rare) cappuccino and a postre of cheese and guyaba. Cost: $35, a record for this trip.
Strolling around the Zocalo around 9 PM, I came across some really good dance troupes - this is fiesta time, and it was Friday night to boot.
