Dec 22, 2017. Izamal, Posada Ya’ax ich
Saw Cenotes San Antonio, Yaxbacaltun for a nice swim (all to myself - left just before a bunch of Kiwis arrived), and two others, much smaller. Flock of birds sped overhead.
Lunch on the road in another great big restaurant/hotel/swimming pool setup, all alone under a giant palapa roof with about twenty tables and a bandstand. Must be so different during the tourist season - wait a minute, it IS the tourist season.
Aké. Working henequen plantation - watched them making fiber. The Edificio de las Pilastres, with its more than 20 stone pillars on top. Very large stones used in the temple construction.
Izamal (nickname: La Ciudad Amarilla: Every building is yellow! I wonder how/why that became so). Enormous Convento de San Antonio de Padua (also yellow), with a museum in the back displaying several of the elaborate gowns that the statue of the virgin of Izamal has been clothed with over the years (Pope John Paul II gave her a silver crown when he visited in 1993).
Hotel very nice, big room, a nice swimming pool, and of course, all the standard appurtenances: WiFi, fan, A/C, hot water, tiwel, soap, shampoo, fresh roll of t.p., bottle of water - all for $25. I’m hoping rates don’t go up, and rooms continue to remain available, after Christmas.
