Dec 21, 2017. Homún, Hotel Santa Maria
A big day. Visited three temples on the Ruta Puuc: Sayil, Xlapak, Labná, as well as Mayapan further on. (Puuc is derived from the Maya term for "hill". The term Puuc is also used to designate the architectural style of ancient Maya sites located within the Puuc hills, hence, the term Puuc architecture. This architectural style began at the end of the Late Classic period but experienced its greatest extent during the Terminal Classic period.
Sayil, Ruta Puuc, Yucatán
85m El Palacio, with columns and porticos reminiscent of Knossos. Great phallus stele (actually, of a man with an enormous phallus.). Obligatory photo standing beside it - just to give it scale, of course.
Xlapak, Ruta Puuc, Yucatán
One building, somewhat reconstructed, with huge Chac masks over the doorways.
Labná, Ruta Puuc, Yucatán
Big, beautiful Palacio, with well-preserved ornamentation, including a crocodile/serpent with a human head in its mouth (god emerging from the underworld?) and the torso of a ball player. Arco de Labná, beautifully preserved, and El Mirador, a large mound of rubble surmounted by a small temple.
