April 1, 2017. Page to Hiway 98 near Page, UT.
After a leisurely breakfast at Denny’s, drove north and west a ways to the trailhead of #55: Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch. Great walk, Wire Pass gradually narrowing to a slot just a few feet wide. Round trip took about 5 hours (the book, wrong again, called the walk 3.4 miles, round trip. No way).
Now late in the day, stopped briefly at my old friend the Toadstool hike, and parked off the road with clear skies and no wind. Finally! Dinner of tabouleh and tuna fish, washed down with a hot chocolate. Looking forward to a good night’s sleep, then off to the Grand Canyon - the south side - to see if I can do the Bright Angel trail.
April 2, 2017. Grand Canyon to Peach Springs, AZ.
South Rim, loaded with tourists. And the Bright Angel trail is on the north side. Oops. A few elk beside the road. Drove a bit along Route 66 (Burma Shave ads on the side of the road).
April 3, 2017. Peach Springs AZ to Beatty NV
Mohave Museum of History & Arts in Kingman had an entire wall of oil portraits of American presidents and first ladies. Better was the Native American folk art. Brief stop at Oatman to watch the non gunfight, the tame burros, and to pick up some elk jerky for Mike.
April 4, 2017. Beatty to Mike Florio’s, NV
Dinner at the local casino (two for one steak dinners), then lots of catching up. A brief tour of the adjacent Anaconda copper pit mine.
April 5 2017. Mike Florio’s, NV
Hung out, ate well, read some good stuff on string theory by Lisa Randall, washed clothes, took a shower. And so ends my Utah Road Trip!
