11. Chiapa de Corzo. Dec 14, 2015. I traveled from Guanajuato to Chiapas by bus, all day and all night, for a distance of about 800 miles.
It is important because the earliest inscribed date, the earliest form of hieroglyphic writing and the earliest Mesoamerican tomb burial have all been found here.

La Pila Fountain, Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas. It was constructed in 1562 in Moorish style, made of brick in the form of a diamond.

Nearby is the burnt temple of San Sebastian and the local cemetery. The mounds of earth, indicating the graves, are covered with pine needles.
Interesting fact: the State of Chiapas has the highest consumption levels of Coca-Cola in the world. The average Chiapeneco drinks over two liters of Coke a day (!) No surprise that the two leading causes of death are heart disease and diabetes.
