Dec 2015: Chiapas
San Juan Chamula
San Juan Chamula
16. San Juan Chamula. Dec 17, 2015. The principal town of the Tzotzils, and the main religious and economic center of the community.
The floor of the church is covered with pine needles. The air is scented with copal resin. Sorry, no photos: photography inside the church is forbidden.
Nearby is the burnt temple of San Sebastian and the local cemetery. The mounds of earth, indicating the graves, are covered with pine needles.
Interesting fact: the State of Chiapas has the highest consumption levels of Coca-Cola in the world. The average Chiapeneco drinks over two liters of Coke a day (!) No surprise that the two leading causes of death are heart disease and diabetes.
