Jan 13, 2019. Hotel Turansa, Nebaj, Guatemala
Wandered around the market, then lots more tough miles, through Sacapulas (with its lovely central square and two giant Ceiba trees) to Nebaj. Had a tough time locating K’umarkaa; finally took tuk-tuks both ways. This was the K’iche’ Maya capital, founded around the 14th century, and eventually conquered by Pedro de Alvarado in 1524. Still used today for prayers & burnt offerings. 100 meter tunnel with multiple altars. Lovely location amongst pine trees.
In Nebaj, a wall was covered with hundreds of photos of locals murdered by the government during the 36 year civil war. In the church, hundreds of crosses of murdered citizens. This city and its neighbors suffered so much..
Dinner at Asados el Pasa Bien: lamb chops, potatoes, salad. Music so loud I had to remove my hearing aid.
