Up at 4, off by 4:30, with Daniel and Naty in the front, Sam, Pichi, Dori, and Sari in the back. Dropped Sari off at the Armenia airport, then on to Bogota, with one stop for a lovely breakfast of waffles and my first real Colombian latte.
Lots of slow going on “La Linea”, a stretch of mountainous road populated mostly by large trucks. Arrived at my hostel around 2 PM: 9 hours on the road! Incidentally, Daniel’s car was armor plated, sides, roof, doors, and floor, and the windows were bulletproof - a reminder of how times were in Colombia not so long ago.
On my own at last: Room at the Graffiti Hostel Bogota, about what to expect for $6. I stayed here for about five days, visiting the great museums, admiring the graffiti, and mostly just wandering about.
Of course, I couldn't miss visiting the fabulous Bogota Gold Museum
Stopped into the bar associated with the Graffiti Hostel Bogota for some cheap beers and a nice discussion with a Venezuelan / Colombian who eventually sort of got on my nerve. Dinner of a very fancy ham sandwich at Capital Covina y Cafe. In bed by 9:30.
Next day, a long stroll through the Candelaria section. Taking lots of pictures of the colorful home fronts.
According to Daniel and Naty, the government is trying to spruce up the place - apparently it used to look a lot like old Havana.
On Sunday I decided to walk to Cerro de Monserrate. Bad idea: everyone else decided to do the same: What surprised me was how nice people were, no pushing, no screaming, just smiles and a lot of patience. In the United States, after two hours there would have been fistfights.
