Nov 27, 2019: Bijuaga, Cabinas Las Nubes ($25.42)
Picked up my Toyota rental in the morning, and drove first to the Butterfly Conservatory. Excellent displays of eggs, caterpillars, pupae, and adults. The outdoor exhibits had lots of morpheus and the one with big eyes on its wings, but not much else. Couple of good frog shots, but not as good as The Frog Pond in Monteverde. I was the only visitor (at least in the beginning).
Maybe that’s because of the rain. It rained a lot the night before, and continued on and off all day. There was a lucky respite while I saw the five Catarata Viento Fresco (I only counted four), which were lovely, especially the last, aptly named Slide Waterfall (Catarata El Tobogan). The driving took all day, mostly going counterclockwise around Laguna de Arenal, nice and jungly, then open green grassy cow-littered hills as I made my way to my hotel. This was so far the rainiest day of my trip. I’m sure glad I have wheels - I would have missed both stops without them.
Best time to visit El Centro de Rescate Las Pumas is between 1 and 3 PM (feeding time). So I think I’ll hit it in the morning, after breakfast at Las Tinajitas (opens 6 am), then head on over to the Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio, and spend the night at the just-booked Cabinas Piuri.
Small enough for you?
