Next stop: Güicán, 9 hours by bus from Mongui (Google Maps predicted about 6 hours, but that prediction was a bit optimistic).
I went to Güicán because it was near the Parque Nacional Natural El Cocuy, which my guidebook said was a good place to go hiking. And it was correct! I met up with two Israeli backpackers, and together we chose the middle of three hikes:
This hike went through the Valle de Los Frailejones...
Past El Pulpito Del Diablo...
And finally to the Laguna Grande. At over 4500 meters, it is the highest point I reached in Colombia.
The view of the nearby glaciers was wonderful, but also sad: because of global warming, the glaciers are getting smaller every year.
On the way back we passed a strange orange river.
Next to a lovely yellow valley.
With wonderful views of Güicán below us.
It was an easy hike too - not as steep as the Iguaque hike I took with Daniel and Naty!
