Here I am again. I hope everyone is safe! From San Gil I took a 7 hour bus ride to Sogamoso and boarded a Mongui bus. Beautiful countryside.
Mongui, once voted the most beautiful town in Boyacá (almost as beautiful as Villa de Leyva!). Here is the view from my hotel window of the famous Puente Real de Calicanto (I'm not sure why it is famous) and the Morro river.
The town has a uniform green and white colonial architecture.
The central square is dominated by the Franciscan Convent. It was started in 1694 and took 100 years to complete.
In Mongui, there are more than 100 stores that produce 100,000 hand-sewn soccer balls each year for Latin countries.
While in town I met six other backpackers. The next day, we hiked the nearby Páramo Ocetá, which I will describe in the next installment.
