The streets are wet: it rained last night - the first rain in a long time.
A 3 hour bus ride (slower than usual because of road construction) and I am in Santa Fe de Antioquia. Wow, is it hot here! I head for the Plaza Mayor for a tamarind juice: my first ever, and a town specialty. Delicious!
Santa Fe Antioquia, founded in 1541, is the region's oldest settlement and was once the capital of Antioquia. It is a lovely whitewashed colonial town that hasn’t changed much since Medellín became the capital in 1826.
Many of the buildings have bare but decorative stone and brick facades, a style called calicanto:
It has several fine churches. On one side of the Plaza is the white-fronted Iglesia Catedral Metropolitana, with its dazzling white front and curious grey/brown sides, and my favorite, this cute skinny little white church, flanked by palm trees, the Iglesia de Jesùs Nazarene:
