Stayed up late last night trying to figure out how to get to Rio Claro, and whether it was worth it. Finally, at 2 AM, I gave up, and decided instead to head straight to Jardin.
So this morning I was off. Goodbye Medellín! I will miss you!
The bus to Jardin took 4 hours to cover about 80 miles; the first three quarters we crept along a mountain-hugging badly-surfaced road; the last quarter we picked up the pace beside the San Juan river valley.
But we made it, and I decided to do what everyone else was doing: find a free table and chair on the Plaza Central...
...sit down next to some relaxed locals...
... order a shot of Colombia’s famous Viejo de Caldas, and watch everybody watching everybody. The plaza is lined with customers, with very few empty chairs (except in the center, clearly not as good a place for people watching). The chairs and tables even extend into the side streets:
It’s late afternoon, the weather is warm and gentle, the skies are blue, the streets and shops are multi-colored and balconied...
...there are tourists (but not many), and everyone is just hanging out, watching everybody else.
While I was enjoying doing nothing at all, a group of cowgirls arrive on horseback, circled the Plaza...
...tied up their horses...
...and sat down at the table next to me (of course I was too shy to speak with them):
That was the most exciting event of the day.
There isn’t much else to do in Jardin - maybe I’ll see a waterfall tomorrow - but that suits me fine
Jardin is considered to be the most beautiful pueblo in Antioquia, and I can see why: it is so bright. Even the Tuk-Tuks are decorated.
Jardin also has some pretty nifty graffiti.
Incidentally, the local specialty in Jardin is callo y oreja frito (fried pig's ear and bovine intestines). I may skip this...
That’s it for today.
